Sustainability

Our planters are made to last, not to trend for a season.

At Indigenus, sustainability is very important to us. We believe that buying fewer, better things is at the heart of our company’s contribution to creating a sustainable future.

One of the reasons we produce all our planters in our factory is that we can constantly improve quality and work towards creating planters for life, not just for a season. Moving away from trends or ‘fast fashion’ is the essence of moving forward sustainably.

Glass Reinforced Concrete

Indigenus planters are crafted from glass-reinforced concrete (GRC). GRC production is VOC-free, making it a sustainable choice. Moreover, GRC is 20 times stronger and more durable than regular concrete, ensuring our planters stand the test of time. We’re dedicated to minimising our carbon footprint by selecting sustainable materials and processes, such as incorporating naturally occurring earth oxides into almost 50% of our GRC formulation.

Forton is used to strengthen the planters. This is a non-hazardous substance or mixture according to United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

FSC Certified Wood

Our wooden planters are a testament to our commitment to sustainability. They are crafted from Iroko, an African teak, sourced exclusively from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-certified suppliers. This dense, hard-wearing wood, rich in natural resins and oils, is highly durable and resistant to rot and insect attack. By choosing Iroko, we support responsible forestry and contribute to preserving our planet’s biodiversity.

Packaging

We use a local company in South Africa for all our boxes and their patented Freight and Interlok crates, which are lightweight, strong and reusable.

They are made from Paper honeycomb packaging, eco-friendly recycled paper, and water-based glue, which makes them incredibly durable and impact-resistant.

The boxes are 100% recyclable and biodegradable.

Packaging means planters are stackable, meaning we can fit more in each truck or container, reducing our carbon footprint.

Reduction of box-sizing to optimise shipping further.

All the planter liners are made of recyclable polyethene.
